Program Description

1 Year Program

The Fire Science program prepares students for careers and post-secondary education in firefighting, emergency services, and public safety through a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on training. Students learn the principles of fire behavior, fire suppression, rescue operations, emergency scene management, communications, equipment use, and firefighter safety while developing the practical skills required for emergency response. The curriculum incorporates concepts from Introduction to Fire Science, Firefighting Tactics, and IFSTA Essentials of Firefighting, covering fire chemistry, extinguishment strategies, rescue and vehicle extrication techniques, fire loss analysis, and fire service operations. Performance is evaluated through written assessments, practical training exercises, professional behavior, safety, attendance, and employability skills. Students gain valuable real-world experience through fire department ride-alongs, live fire evolution training, vehicle extrication exercises, and a mass casualty incident drill conducted in partnership with the EMT program. Throughout the program, students develop technical expertise, teamwork, leadership, communication, critical thinking, and sound decision-making skills, preparing them for employment or continued education in firefighting, emergency medical services, fire protection, emergency management, and related public safety fields.
