Program Description

The Cosmetology program prepares students for careers and post-secondary education in the beauty industry through a combination of classroom instruction, hands-on salon experience, and state-approved training. As a licensed cosmetology school, the program provides the 1,500 clock hours required for eligibility to take the Illinois State Cosmetology Licensing Examination. Students learn from licensed instructors while developing professional skills in hair cutting, styling, coloring, chemical texture services, nail technology, esthetics, makeup application, sanitation, client relations, and salon operations. The curriculum also covers anatomy, physiology, chemistry, business ethics, marketing, and state regulations. Performance is evaluated through written assessments, practical salon work, professional behavior, safety, attendance, and industry competency standards. Students gain real-world experience by providing services in Salon 301 and may participate in internships, fashion shows, theatrical productions, and community service projects. The program also offers up to 50 hours of dual credit through the College of DuPage. Throughout the program, students develop technical expertise, creativity, communication, customer service, professionalism, and time management skills, preparing them for employment or continued education in cosmetology, esthetics, salon management, and related beauty professions.
