Introduction to Medical Professions (Previously Med Term)

Program Description

1 Year Program

The Introduction to Medical Professions program prepares students for careers and post-secondary education in healthcare through a combination of classroom instruction, interactive activities, and career exploration experiences. Students develop a strong foundation in biomedical terminology while learning how medical language connects to body systems, procedures, specialties, and healthcare careers. The curriculum covers medical word structure, prefixes and suffixes, anatomy and physiology, medical terminology related to body systems, pharmacology, radiology, oncology, psychiatry, healthcare documentation, and professional communication. Students also explore healthcare pathways including diagnostic services, therapeutic services, health informatics, biotechnology research and development, and support services. Performance is evaluated through written assessments, projects, case studies, participation, professional behavior, attendance, and employability skills. The program offers dual-credit opportunities in Biomedical Terminology and Survey of Health Care Careers for eligible students through college partnerships. Throughout the program, students develop medical knowledge, critical thinking, communication, organization, teamwork, and problem-solving skills while gaining insight into a variety of healthcare professions. This foundation prepares students for continued education and careers in nursing, medical assisting, surgical technology, radiology, physical therapy, healthcare administration, and other health science fields.
